Venue

Bordeaux is the capital of the department Gironde in the region Aquitaine, with more than a million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. The campus of Bordeaux is the largest of France in terms of number of students (over 60,000). Bordeaux is a world-renowned city, famed for its vineyards, gastronomy, and high quality of life. Offering a mix of rich historical heritage and modernity, the city is home to remarkable contemporary architectural works. Tourists enjoy wandering through Bordeaux's World Heritage area and its beautiful quarters, discovering the city's sites and monuments by bike, visiting its museums, or taking a promenade by the river. The cultural, artistic, and music scenes of Bordeaux are also very vibrant. Bordeaux is considered a tolerant and relaxed place.

We encourage participants attending the EDBT-Intended summer school, especially if they are coming from a far distance or by plane, to get the most out of their trip to France, for example by attending Highlights 2022, which takes place, in Paris, from June 28th to July 1st—this is the week preceding the EDBT-Intended summer school.

Transportation

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is a regional airport which serves mostly domestic flights, though there are international flights as well connecting Bordeaux to some European "hub" airports like Paris, London, Madrid, and Amsterdam. It is also connected to many destinations through low-cost companies. An express bus runs frequently to the city center. The main train station (Gare Saint Jean) is near the city center. Several trains per day (around one every two hours) go north (to Paris, about 2 hours and 25 trains a day), south (to Toulouse, Marseille, Montpellier, Nice), and east (to Périgueux and Clermont-Ferrand). There is a tramway linking the campus and the city center.
